You can be Happy

“It has been my observation that people are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be,” Abraham Lincoln, the former US President once said. And I want to take a good look at what that good man had in mind with this nugget, YOU CAN BE HAPPY.
Dear Reader, are you happy?

According to Abraham Lincoln, you can decide to be happy. In other words, happiness is a matter of choice. Someone said that happiness depends on happenings. I believe rather that happiness depends on how we respond to happenings and we can choose how we respond to our circumstances. YOU CAN DECIDE TO BE HAPPY.

Not making a decision is a decision. Not deciding to be happy is deciding to by unhappy. This passive decision to be unhappy is what a countless number of people make unconsciously everyday. It is the easiest thing in the world to be unhappy. It happens when we are not prepared to make the necessary decisions and efforts required for happiness.

Of course, we must be realistic. Many of the problems that beset us are beyond our control or not under our direct influence but we must quickly remind ourselves that we may not be in control of situations all the time but we are always in control of our attitudes; of how we respond to those situations. Whatever the circumstances, we can choose to be happy, “but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast” says the Bible.

Having a merry heart means that happiness has become our habit. We have made up our minds to be happy all the time. When we have cultivated this habit for happiness that verse say life will become a continual feast for us everyday.

I believe that you can now see that happiness is a matter of choice for us. Norman Vincent Pearle in his book, Power of Positive Thinking, says “a very large proportion of the unhappiness of the average individual is self-manufactured.” People manufacture unhappiness by thinking unhappy thoughts thereby developing a Negative Mental Attitude. With a negative mental attitude, some do not attract happiness they repel it.

But we can manufacture our happiness by thinking happy thoughts which, when done consistently, will give us a Positive Mental Attitude. A positive mental attitude will always attract happiness. With a positive mental attitude, you will always expect the best and when you expect the best, you will get it.

The best way to start a happy day is to begin with happy thoughts. We should remember that God is present with us. Psalm16:11 say that, “In God’s presence, there is fullness of joy”. To come into God’s presence, the Bible says we should enter into His gates with thanksgiving in our hearts and into His courts with praise. Thanksgiving and praise create an atmosphere of God’s presence around us.

We can also confess and sing the words of Psalm 118:24, “This is the day which the Lord has made; we shall rejoice and be glad in it.” And I might add, “No matter what!”
Dear Reader, do this tomorrow morning. Start your day by thinking happy thoughts. Thoughts from the word of God and thoughts of the good things God has done for you. Don’t start your day with thoughts like, “I must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed” or, this is going to be another tough day” or “Why are things always working against me?” Another one is “I don’t know what to do.” Once you begin to think like this, it’s time to re-examine yourself. Time to caution yourself.

When such thoughts come to your mind, eject them immediately and say to yourself, “This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.” Children are far better than us adults in this area and Jesus said we have to become like them to enjoy the Kingdom of God. I love to look into the face of my boy every morning, especially when he was two months old. He starts his day with smiles. He evidently expects the best from each day. When I see those smiles, I say out loud, this will be a great day. We are on top today. All things are working together for good for us today.

Dear reader, start this today, whatever your circumstances, and tomorrow will be a happy day, the day after, and all the days of your life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Growth is Exciting

Is there anyone of us there who wouldn’t agree? Mark 4:26-28 (KJV) says, “And He said, so is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast a seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn.”

In this passage, Jesus explains the process and principle of growth. Verse 26 says that the kingdom of God is as if when a man casts a seed into the ground. What does that tell us? That the potential for growth has been invested in the seed. God has put within the seed, the power to grow to maturity and to multiply itself. We should understand that every big thing starts small. We as human beings begin life as tiny specks in the womb invisible to the eye. Likewise, everything else we know of in the universe, starts small.

The large multinational companies around us started out small. Some started in people’s living rooms. Coca-cola started in a kettle. The formula was derived at by doctor, and the ingredients were mixed with water by the use of a paddle. You know what it has grown into today.
Notice that the man in our story from Mark 4 cast his seed into the ground. You must not be afraid to start. Seeds don’t grow until you plant them. It doesn’t matter how much planning and dreaming you do. John 12:24 says, “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone. But if it die, then it bringeth forth much fruit.”

The business proposal in your briefcase cannot grow until you begin to give it physical form. Do something about it. And experience the excitement as it begins to grow. Mark 4:27 says that the man sleeps and rises everyday, and that the plant springs up and grows and the man knows not how.

That is the truth. No one can analyze the power that makes bones to grow in a baby while in the womb, or what makes leave to germinate from a seed in the ground. We can analyze and understand the process alright, but not the power. If man could analyze the power, then we would have attempted to reproduce it. But no human laboratory has produced a seed that has the power to multiply itself. 1Corinthians 3:6 says, “Paul planted, Appollos watered and God gave the increase.”

Growth is a normal part of life. Under normal circumstances, we should grow; our children should grow; our businesses should grow. We must however bear in mind that it is only God who makes things grow. It is the biggest secret many people can’t seem to grasp.
When you have done all God expects you to do about your business, you must trust God to make your business grow. I like the attitude of the man in Jesus’ illustration in Mark 4. The man slept and rose night and day. Refusing to sleep and worrying through the night will not make your business grow. Worry and anxiety have never added to anyone’s life. They only take away.

God wants us to live our lives stress-free. So I say to you: Enough of toiling and struggling. Have faith in God that your businesses will grow. Psalm 67:5-6 says, “Let the people praise thee, O God, let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.” When you cultivate the habit of praising God in everything, you have discovered the secret of moving God to action on your behalf.

Praise God everyday and God will work miracles of growth in your marriage and your business in Jesus name. Mark 4:28 says, “For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.”

There are two things here. The first is that the earth brings forth fruit of herself. God has designed these principles that we are discussing, all your plans will succeed. The second thing to note in that verse is that growth is a process. It says, “first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear.”

It takes time for things to grow. That is true of the baby in the womb. Also true of the business venture. Just like you can’t hurry a baby out of the womb, you can’t force your business to grow faster than God allows. You have to be patient.

As a pastor, I have defined the purpose of God for my Church. And God is supplying the strategies by which our goals will be accomplished. As He supplies the strategies, we act on them. But after that, there is nothing else that I can do to make my Church grow. So I thank God because I believe He will make the Church grow and guess what? We’re growing. Refusing to sleep will not change any of them. Worry and anxiety will not help. Praising God does.

Whatever may have hindered your growth: in marriage, in your academics, on your job or in your business, such hindrances will be removed today in Jesus name. You will not toil any more. You will not fret. You will not despair and you will not fail.

“Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase” Job 8:7. Listen to me. Your business will grow. Your hundreds will become thousands.

And your thousands will become millions. And the millions will become billions. Multinational corporations will grow out of this nation, in Jesus’ name.

Run with a Vision

God does not grant wishes; He grants desires, strong desires. To succeed, we must be hungry and thirsty for success. Having an appetite for something is proof of the existence of that thing. Hunger is proof of the reality of food.

Thirst is proof of the reality of water. A strong desire for success is proof that we can succeed. John Mason once said, “Unless you try to see beyond what you have already seen, you will never grow.” What you see is what you get.

That is the law of success. George Barna, a management consultant once said, “Vision is foresight based on insight with the benefit of hindsight.” Foresight is the ability to see into the future. Hindsight is the ability to understand the past and to be able to apply what we learn to the present and the future.

I believe that the key word in Barna’s definition is insight. Insight is simply the ability to see with our inner eyes. What we see with our inner eyes today is what we shall see with our physical eyes tomorrow. Genesis 13:14-15 says, “The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.’

”Vision is the art of seeing things that are unseen. Whatever our circumstances may be, we can always have a dream of a better tomorrow.

A man or woman of vision is never finished. God told Abraham to lift up his eyes from where he was. You see, where you are is good enough to start from, even if you are flat on your back. You can always look up. The sky is your limit.

We all live under the same sky, but we don’t all see the same horizon. Successful people are those who see the bigger pictures. Some people stay within the confines of their present predicament like Abraham did; sitting in his house.

They brood over their miseries not seeing any possible way out of their situation. Some others fair better. They peep through the window. The problem however is that they only catch a piece of the sky. We must all break through the barriers and limitations around us.

We must expand our horizons. Dear Reader, you may see poverty around you today with your physical eyes. Don’t let it dominate your inner eyes because what you see inside today is what you will get tomorrow. You may feel pain or sickness in your body right now. However, you must see yourself perfectly healthy in your heart.

The power of sickness was destroyed on your behalf on the Cross of Calvary. Did you fail an examination or interview? You are not a failure. Hold on to the dream of success that God has given you. Is your marriage going through a rough time? Keep that dream of a happy marriage in your heart.

Do it through prayer. Do it by meditating on God’s Word. Or are you satisfied with your level of success today? If what you did yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today. Expand your horizon. Like Abraham, you can envision so much blessing your great-grandchildren will enjoy out of it. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is not vision, the people perish.” I pray, Dear Reader, you will not perish. Your tomorrow will be alright.

God will give you new visions, new dreams. You will succeed in marriage, in business in your career and in your relationship with God.

This great country will not perish. It will become a land flowing with milk and honey. There will be food on our tables, uninterrupted power supply, jobs for our people. For with God, nothing shall be impossible.
